Matthew Chevallard interview + Casa Del Toro, Refinery29

How did you start Del Toro and why?
“Del Toro started in Palm Beach six years ago. Myself and two friends wanted bespoke slippers to commemorate our boarding school experience during graduation, but we soon realized that our only option was upwards of $900 and would take 9-12 months.

A lot has changed since that original idea, but that that is how I got my foot in the door in the industry. I founded it with two friends but took it over three years ago from them and changed the vision significantly. Our original business model was bespoke velvet slippers and it has evolved enormously ever since. We had one style shoe and color to start, and I have close to 50 different products of shoes and belts. It shows where and how we are developing. My vision now is honing Del Toro as a luxury lifestyle brand.

What does Del Toro mean?
“It represents myself and where I come from—Del Toro means a fan of Torino Calcio, which is the soccer team my father and I have cheered for ever since I was a child in Italy. It represents my hometown of Torino and our heritage as a brand, Made in Italy yet infused with American prep and sneakerhead culture.”

What or who are some of your inspirations?
“I have a lot of inspirations but essentialy I characterize my style and brand as a mix of Italian elegance, American prep, and NYC sneaker culture.”

What’s the one item in your closet you can’t live without?
“Very hard question; I am very attached to all my accessories. My watch collection, shoes, belts, luggage—all would be hard to relinquish. I love my cashmere and suede, texture is very important to me.”

What will be your next big purchase?
“I always have my eye on goodies. A vintage Cherry Red Mustang most likely will be next.”

Describe the aesthetic of your house
“Mediterranean/Art Deco infused, with an eclectic interior which represents myself and Del Toro.”

What are your favorite stores in Miami?
“That’s very hard, but I would have to say the Webster. Miami is in need of some better stores without a question. It is such a quickly growing city so there is a large void there.”

What’s next for Del Toro?
“Expanding the brand into more and more styles as well as offerings. A flagship store in Miami Beach, among much else.”

How would you describe your personal style?
“My style is Del Toro. My style comes from my upbringing. Italy/ Palm Beach/ NYC mixed with Los Angeles. I like to pull and mix styles to form a relatively unique style. Individuality to me is most important, so I strive to be unique yet classic.”

Do you collect anything?
“I tend to collect everything. Watches, shoes, clothes, luggage, pocket squares, belts, art, candles, Creed….I’m sure there’s more.”

What’s the coolest pair of Del Toros you’ve ever designed?
“That is an ever evolving answer, every month that changes. I am graced with an amazing factory which will do anything that comes to my mind.

Right now, I’d say this new suede finished Crocodile Chukka sneaker. I made four sets: Tiffany Blue, Fire Red, Cobalt Blue, and Navy Blue. They are incredible and will be really game changing.”

Do you get a lot of comparisons to Stubbs?
“I find myself nothing like Stubbs. The only similarity is our slipper offerings, which even there we differ immensely. Our cut is much more comfortable and Italian loafer-like. Our vamp rises higher to achieve this. I also stay away from quirky novelties like embroideries. My shoes are meant to be more timeless then just cocktail drunk Waspy talk.”

Del Toro x Street Etiquette

Joshua Kissi : It has been quite some time since Street Etiquette has released any product in collaboration with another great company, but we’re excited to announce the release of these new great shoes. Just in time for New York Fashion Week, limited to only 35 pairs released, think of these as a late holiday gift to our readers who have supported us from the beginning.

We retrieved this amazing tapestry fabric here in New York City, but the shoes were produced in Italy. Travis and I thought it would be kind of cool to take the slipper away from its usual velvet material, and apply some funky tapestry that you can practically wear with anything. Also keep in mind due to the fabric no pair of shoes are exactly the same which is pretty cool.

The launch of our online store is still currently in construction, look for this to launch in the next month or two with product. For the time being for these  particular shoes you can BUY them here at Del Toro’s web shop at retail for $325.00 – These shoes run pretty true to size for most guys, after some good breaking in the comfort level on the shoes are bar none. In general all of the slippers we have are from Del Toro, a Miami based shoe brand who produces/manufactures all of their product in Italy.

We want to thank Matt, everyone at Del Toro, and you guys as always.

The 20 Best Outfits Our Editors Wore To NYFW

“You might have noticed my obsession with Del Toro—the designer, Matthew Chevallard, always seems to create at least one pair of shoes I want. I pre-orded these camo wingtips months and months ago, so I had completely forgotten until they arrived a couple weeks ago. One of the benefits or pre-ordering…”

Hypebeast, Fall/Winter 2012

Del Toro‘s Fall/Winter 2012 collection sees a greatly expanded offering from the Miami-based shoemaker. While usually finding its stride within the velvet slipper realm, the new season sees styles such as boots and sneakers, including a leather hiking boot which has been a popular silhouette amongst designers in recent seasons. Other highlights include a camouflage sneaker done in a vulcanized aesthetic, as well as several wingtip brogue options and of course velvet slippers, including offerings in camouflage, leopard and studs.

Just in time for New York Fashion Week and limited to only 35 pairs, Street Etiquette for Del Toro is one of the few collaborations for the New York City-based duo in recent memory. With tapestry fabric procured from the Big Apple and made in Italy, the shoe itself is a one-of-a-kind piece of art thanks to the individuality the fabric lends itself to. The Tapestry Shoe can be purchased at the Del Toro online store for $325 USD.

Refinery29, “Camo Brogues? Raffia Slippers? This Cult Shoe Line Has ‘Em All”

http://www.refinery29.com/del-toro-spring-2012-look-book

We’re going into the weekend on a trippy, colorful note inspired by Miami’s own shoe brand Del Toro, which has amassed a cult following from fashion editors and buyers alike. The spring ’12 lookbook could serve as a manual for showing waspy-punk inspired females and fellas how to pull together a dapper, fresh look that paints outside the lines of the yawn-worthy norm. Of course, the signature Del Toro Prince Albert Slipper Loafer is still in the mix, but—yes!—available in even a more colorful mix of bright solids and fun patterns like leopard, zebra, military chic camo, and raffia. But, even more exciting, the line is clearly expanding from just slippers—hello bold wingtips. And they look like they’d be the spike to the proverbial punch at any party, if founder and designer Matthew Chevallard and his gang, lounging like a Tommy Hilfiger ad on chronic in these snaps, are anything to go by. We’ll take a (velvet) hit.

Man Repeller, CATS PAJAMA PAJAMAS

CATS PAJAMA PAJAMAS

Following a brief but important look at the sort of mind boggling success stories of the U.S market, you can file Forever Lazy under weird voids we didn’t know existed–here’s an obligatory note about taking the innerwear as outerwear trend far away from your neighborhood tailgate and giving it a real try. Yes, it’s been done, several times, but what’s once more in the grand scheme of socially acceptable comfort?  Now, while the title at hand may read anti-climactic–there are no actual pajamas printed with cats wearing pajamas, there are stripes and polka dots. And…that’s the cats pajamas! Behold, silk blue and white stripes, black and gold polka dots. These are special pants. I found them at a vintage shop in Venice Beach last month. They’re Christian Dior a la 1970 and embody the perfect length of high waist, leg slit, palazzo, and sheerness. I guess that’s the thing about vintage: in a world where ultimately nothing is new, taking a trend to its source will likely always render satisfying. I call this one: happy as a clam. Do also note the two tone metallic flamingo loafers on foot. No detail went spared in an effort to role play. And with all the research manifesting about the side effects of spending too much time seated–here’s a photo to encapsulate what mankind may look like should we find ourselves in a world where standing desks become the norm:

Equipment blouse, vintage Christian Dior pants, Del Toro x Man Repeller loafers, DANNIJO necklace.

Sleeping, not just for bedtime. Sleepwear, not just for sleep. See: The Row, Karen Walker, Thakoon, Proenza Schouler, Stubbs & Woottons’s entire business plan. It’s an organic chain reaction.

Theophilus London in Del Toro

Had the pleasure of meeting Theophilus London yesterday when he made a surprise visit over to #CasaDelToro

He loved the shoes and all and we are already in discussion to get something going on in the future together.

He walked out with Navy Limited Edition Hand Embroidered Crest with Mantaray Stripe and Royal Blue Sole (limited to 35 pairs) and  pair of black classics.

He also copped a Red Intrecciato belt which he donned on stage at his performance at Grand Central in Miami. #mostdope

Happy Year of the Dragon: Inspired Gifts to Celebrate the Chinese Holiday

http://www.vogue.com/vogue-daily/article/happy-new-year-of-the-dragon-inspired-gifts-to-celebrate-the-chinese-holiday/

Were you tempted to get a dragon tattoo à la Lisbeth Salander (not something we’re actively suggesting, mind), today would have to be the auspicious day to do it. Monday January 23 is the first day of the Chinese New Year, and 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. All over China, 235 million people will travel to see their families for the festival, and every Chinatown in every city in the world will be celebrating with dragon dance festivals over the coming week. Vogue adds its salutations to a people whose enthusiasm for and knowledge about fashion is indivisibly entwined with the future—and in the creativity of a rising generation of talented Asian-Americans and Asian-Europeans designers. Horoscopes apart, it’s a certain prediction that, whether designing or traveling and shopping all over the globe, China’s optimistic young dragons will be shaping the way the world looks in 2012.

Getkempt.com – Urban Daddy Men’s Fashion Blog — Capsule NYC

The trade show/blogger convention known as Capsule has come and gone, and apart from a few stand-outs (which you’ll be hearing about in the weeks to come), it was a blur of handsomeness: plaid after plaid, camo after camo, and more good ideas than we’ve ever seen in one place.

So we thought we’d pass on the menswear headrush in the best way we know how—lots and lots of photos.

Here:

Del Toro

After making some great slippers for spring, this young shoe brand has moved into wingtips. Most of them seem to be camouflage, true, but still a nice pair of shoes with a contrasting sole.

Available in some solid suedes, too. —K.S.

Del Toro x Man Repeller Fancy Flamingo loafers, $325

But that doesn’t imply Rihanna’s next album coming to fruition. This is more about Hefner kicks and metallic birds. Its been a long time coming, even since before the days of two tone booties that resemble violent weaponry and little cuban men dancing on green velvet grounds, so today in tear-jerking collaborations that rock: Del Toro and myself combine mental beans to create a loafer that so eloquently states another MR mantra: vive le fancy flamingo. The design concept was born last April while still on a burgundy suede Celine trip, unable to refer to humans as humans, in favor of dubbing them tropical vertebrae. Had it been any later, these likely would have been houndstooth-clad, flamingo still on foot. After all, they’re a salute to spring’s tropical prints and an easy insert on the man repeller front. Note the striking comparisons: awkward necks, beaks for mouths, unusual bodies, mile-long legs and, you know, just general fanciness. In the name of asymmetry, I gave the embroidered little dudes some counterparts of another color hue and there you have it: you’re silver, you’re gold, you’re badass, you’re old. Or young, whatever, annihilate my rhyme if you feel like you have to, but buy thee flamingos here.

Man Repeller x Del Toro — Stylecaster

Del Toro – the purveyor of kick-ass loafers and accessories for both men and women — has wowed us again. This time our jaws are dropping over their new collaboration with the one and only Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller. We all know Leandra has some serious style from top-to-bottom (no real wonder what her secret is considering the insane and painful shoe collection she has).

Well, lucky for us we’ll be able to make our feet look even better and hurt a whole lot less. Meet Del Toro’s latest collaboration with the Man Repeller: an awesome pair of smoking loafers that we’re sure everyone will love. The suede Prince Albert slippers come in burgundy, making them a great eye-catching addition to any outfit without being over-the-top. We love the two contrasting colored flamingos finished-off with the notorious Del Toro vertical stripe gracing the back.

We can’t think of an animal that screams “men get away from me!” more than a flamingo. Long necks, thick bodies and two legs as skinny as toothpicks doesn’t really exude the come-hither vibe. As an animal? Not that cute. On shoes? Absolutely fabulous! The shoes are available here. For $325 you can get a pair of the limited edition loafers (only 45 pairs are available) designed by the blogging phenomenon.

So what are you waiting for? This is one of the first collaborations of 2012, so start the year off right. Go! Go! Go! If you do get them, tweet us a picture @StyleCaster. We want to live vicariously through you.

Grungy Gentleman 2011 Menswear Awards

http://www.grungygentleman.com/2011/12/grungy-gentleman-2011-menswear-awards.html
MENSWEAR BRANDS
Best Runway Show: Michael Bastian Spring 2012
The return of Basty, LeBron James sitting front row next to Stefano Tonchi, a James Dean theme, an infamous nip-slip, and Kanye West "All Of the Lights" bumping.
Pretty fabulous ingredients to a runway show. And as always, the clothes were spectacular. Huge fan of the blazers!
Best Lookbook: Riviera Club Spring 2011
It is amazing what this Santa Barbara crew can do with a pair of well-tailored chinos, a woven, and a washed out hoodie.
Implementing a concept for a lookbook that speaks to its core brand is essential. Riviera Club did just that via boats, booze, cars, and dirt bikes. Well played fellas.
Most Exciting Brand: Band of Outsiders
Scott Sternberg, former Hollywood Agent, is one for theatrics. His clothing line, Band of Outsiders wow'ed us with their West Side Story themed runway show at Pitti Uomo for spring 2012 (see above.)
When Band showed in New York for fall 2011, their show started with models mountain climbing down from the ceiling. If editors were not already happy enough, they had a cookie from Momofuku Milk Bar placed on their seat. Runway is not the end game for the American brand. Their polaroid-style lookbooks have become a major hit too, starring the likes of Andrew Garfield, Aziz Ansari, and Donald Glover to James Marden, Tom Felton and Rupert Grint.
Best New Designer: N. Hoolywood
N. Hoolywood was the surprise of New York Fashion Week for 2011. For their fall '11 show, monotone outerwear consumed the runway,
channeling 1930's mountaineers. Designer, Daisuke Obana followed up in spring 2012 showing at a vintage movie theater,
with models interacting in a movie title sequence (see above), most commonly used in the 1950's and 1960's.
Luckily for us, the collection is given the same amount of attention to detail as the runway shows they produce.
Best Catalogue: GANT
If you do not subscribe to GANT's hard-copy catalogue, I suggest you do yourself a favor and get on that.
Best catalogue in menswear hands down. Look forward to it coming to my mailbox every season. The editorial is outstanding
and timepiece advertisements are flawless. Their GANT Rugger imagery insert inside the book is phenomenal (see above.)
Most Innovative Brand: Junya Watanabe
Fair isle blazers, patch-work outerwear, tartan elbow bads, and a bunch of color. That is the recipe for the coolest Japanese brand on the planet.
Their cult following consists of menswear fiends who understand fabrics and fit. Remember..."if you don't got fit, you don't got shit." Wear with confidence.
Best Designer: Dries Van Noten
"I think I tell enough about myself when I make my clothes and when I show them. I don’t need people to buy clothes for who I am;
I prefer them to buy things that I create," states Dries Van Noten. The man has been doing it for years and continues to show
his audience that style is timeless. More words of wisdom from the man himself, "I don’t like to create head-to-toe outfits.
I prefer to make garments for people to wear in lots of different ways. It’s important that they can make the clothes their own and wear them in any way they want to express what they want to say about themselves." Amen.
Best Shoe Designer: Mark McNairy Bucks, brogues, and saddle shoes, OH MY! The illest footwear designer on the planet, nicknamed McNasty is the king of the shoe game.
Badass should be his middle name. Flowers on top of camouflage? No problem. Bright color soles? Standard.
Best New Shoe Designer: Del Toro Graduated from slippers to a jack of all trades. Perforated espadrilles, camouflage brogues, mantaray slippers are a few of Del Toro's latest creations.
It has been a busy past few months for the Miami based shoe brand. Their Art Basel presentation was the bomb dot com and they put together a radical
pop-up shop in Palm Beach, FL. Be on the lookout next for Italian, handmade belts via Matt Chevallard aka Matty #MostDope.
Best Accessories: Miansai
If you haven't seen a Miansai credit in a magazine, have you picked up a menswear publication in 2011? The coolest bracelet company on
the planet keeps getting cooler. Looking for unique wristwear? Check out Miansai at Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Collette, Liberty,
Saturdays, and The Webster. What is Michael Saiger's latest stunt? He just released a 14K Gold iPhone Case, that retails for $10,000.

Holiday Cheer

Tibi and Del Toro have teamed up again to welcome the holiday season. The brands will offer three limited-edition velvet slipper styles featuring signature character Billy Cat, as well as a green alien a drawing, as an extension to their fall launch. When designing, Tibi founder Amy Smilovic said she focuses on creating fun styles. “The slippers bring that quirky element to an otherwise polished look,” she said. The collection, which was produced in Italy, will sell for $375.00 at Tibi boutique in New York and at Tibi.com.
