Fashionista.com, Mark Zuckerberg in Del Toro by Carlos Campos
Carlos Campos, designer
“I applaud Mark Zuckerberg’s successful career and how he proves that you don’t have to conform to the standard Wall St. look to be on top of your game. That said, he should change the hoodie and jeans combo for an outfit that is more polished and edgy. I’d style him in a pair of clean chinos and oxford shoes, no socks of course. As for the top, I would add a bright orange camo shirt layered with a green leather jacket that exudes a cool factor and portrays his ‘I don’t care what you think of me’ attitude. ”– Navy Nappa Wingtips, featherweight white sole, available at http://www.deltoroshoes.com/mwing-lea-blu-bro.html
GQ :Chats With Kick Ass Menswear Guys: Matt Chevallard From Del Toro Shoes

Matt Chevallard has taken his startup slipper company from the dorms of a New England prep school to South Beach, and put his shoes on some of the heaviest hitters in the sports, and music worlds (Dwayne Wade is frequently seen in them, Lil Wayne was an early adopter). So how do you go from outfitting your friends to designing custom kicks for Lapo Elkann? We chatted with Chevallard on a recent trip to New York about summer footwear, strawberry candy, and the first thing he notices about someone else’s style.

GQ: Del Toro Shoes has gone from a slipper company founded by some buddies to a regularly featured shoe company, well regarded and in the hands (or should i say on the feet) of some pretty powerful people in the sports and music worlds. Explain how you keep evolving, and how your goals have changed…
Matt Chevallard: I took over the business from my friends and co-founders a couple of years ago, and really tried to change the vision and substance behind the brand. I’ve really strived to build a luxury lifestyle feel with my offerings, branding, and client base. I’m trying to fuse American prep with Italian effortlessness, and New York, and Japanese streetwear, and sneakerhead culture. The ultimate goal though is always offering well-made shoes that are unique, and at the same time accessible in price. We keep expanding the offerings, and always look to appeal to a versatile client base. We’re one of the few American companies making unique, and exclusive shoes. One of the ways we’re trying trying to make sure our message stays strong is by getting our product in the right hands.
GQ: How do you explain the shift in mainstream men’s fashion towards more colorful kicks? Guys who wouldnt sway from black and brown are now wearing shoes with neon yellow soles.
Chevallard: I think men have kicked their style into a higher gear. Guys in America are really starting to care more about their asthetic, and pushing the envelope with more unique pieces in their wardrobes… they’re not afraid of color. Shoes are the easiest way to add something to a look, and showing what you stand for. The colorful shoe trend says “Hey, I am unique, but still have appreciation for timeless things.” I think a lot of guys want to have more fun with their closets, but do it a subdued, and gradual way. Shoes are a natural place to start.

GQ: We empty your pockets right now… what do we find?
Chevallard: My pockets are always stuffed! My car keys, royal blue alligator money clip, house keys, Trussardi camouflage wallet, iPhone (and a Blackberry), vintage gold Cartier shades, Del Toro lighter, Camel cigarettes, and strawberry Hi-Chews.
GQ: That’s an impressive arsenal. What’s the one shoe a guy needs for summer?
Chevallard: Really tough question to answer, right there. Too many good options! I’m going to settle on a fine, well-made pair of espadrilles from Italy. Everyone is used to really poorly and cheaply made espadrilles made in Bangledesh, and China and you can’t properly understand espadrilles until you acquire a pair made properly. Our espadrilles are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. We use the espadrille silhouette, but ditch the jute sole… it’s that much more comfortable.

DT x RP Socks on Selectism
http://www.selectism.com/news/2012/04/28/del-toro-richer-poorer-socks-shoes-socks-burgers-fries/
Del Toro and Richer Poorer work on a four piece sock collection to help kick it up a little on the footwear side. They’re made in the USA and listening to Iva Pawling compare them in this manner: “Shoes are to socks what burgers are to fries.”
How the hell can we argue that? Choose from blue or green digi camo, navy/red in contrasting stripe formations. $20 a pair is alright.

There is certainly nothing “basic” about the footwear Miami-based Del Toro has been dropping recently, so when they team up with blogger Grungy Gentleman, what else can you expect other than a pair of red-bottomed Camouflage Brogues?
The like-mindedness and unconventional approach to style linked Del Toro owner, Mathew Chevallard and the Grungy Gentleman himself, Jace Lipstein, in which they put their heads together for this Italian-made, suede Sahara-Style Camo Brogue ($325) that defies your normal footwear. As they should, right?

These camouflage brogue’s are disgustingly perfect. The color of the sole are just right for Spring and let’s be real, camo is season neutral. You’ll be able to wear these well into the seasons. However, there’s only 25 pairs up for grabs! The shoes go on sale today, which you can purchase here.
We’re obsessing over these and so should you. Collaborations are the new thing my friend and this is one of the strongest collaborations we’ve seen in a while.

Fashion We Like, Matthew Chevallard and Del Toro
Matthew Chevallard is the owner and creative director of Del Toro shoes. He is based in Miami, Florida.
Q: The most stylish person you have ever seen…
It’s a toss up between Lapo Elkann and Pharell Williams. I just think that each has a very iconic style that I admire a lot.
Q: Please describe your style in three words.
Classic, yet fresh.
Q: What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Being concerned with “trends” and what people think or will judge you for what you are wearing. Individuality to me is the most important in style.
Q: Do you believe in role models?
Of course. Everyone should always have people who influence and inspire them. It is important to take your favorite aspects from the style of your role models and integrate them into your own.
Q: What are your favourite fabrics?
Cashmere, suede, and linen.
Q: Are there any style combinations that you object to?
Not particularly. I detest flip flops and bow ties—aside from that I’m pretty game for anything.
Q: Which city has the best-dressed men?
Milan, hands down.
Q: Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
I’d say more on the bold side but still very Italian classic.
Q: What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?
No rules. Comfort is important and being unique.
Q: Celebrities and style…
Have a huge significance on forming trends and what people like to wear.
Q: One garment /accessory that you can never have enough of?
Shoes…But I am an accessory freak—always have been—so I am mad for all accessories.
Q: A man should always look like…
Himself, with his own form of style. Iconic.
Q: Who taught you what you know about style?
I had a lot of influences but inherently my father who is the classic dapper Italian gentleman.
Q: How do you select your clothing every morning?
I start with the the shoes and then build my outfit based on those.
Q: Your biggest regret is…
I never have regrets because I always try to live life to the fullest. If I have to say something, then not capitalizing enough on current momentum.
Q: The three essential things a man should know about style are…
Be yourself, don’t give a damn what people think about you, and be comfortable.
Q: Do you have any shopping rituals?
Other than always trying to buy stuff on vacation, not really. I love mementos and there are no better than articles of clothing and accessories from traveling.
Q: We will never see you wearing…
Flip flops.
Q: What is the first thing you notice on a man?
Their shoes and watch.
Q: Which new designers do you follow and why?
Well not necessarily new but some of my favorites are Simon Spurr, Visvim, and Brunello Cucinelli…
Q: The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is…
His shoes.
Q: What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?
All of my accessories. Shoes and watches in particular.
Q: Is comfort an enemy of style?
Not at all, I always make sure I am comfortable.
Q: Which designer never fails to impress you?
Visvim and Brunello Cucinelli.
Q: Who would you like to see next in “My style”?
Michael Saiger and Camilo Rios.
Q: The best words of advice you have ever heard?
If you build it they will come.

Being an avid supporter of the Miami Heat and our superstar Dwyane Wade, I went to go meet him at his office when he called. He has been a big fan of all Del Toro specifically noting the product’s styling and comfort. I went by his office in American Airlines Arena and let him design a couple pairs for himself.
An honor to have the NBA’S most stylish player in Del Toro Shoes. GQ.
A lot of suedes, animal prints, and patent leathers were used. Now everyone has to wait to see his creative effort at work.

Matthew Chevallard, SLAM x HYPE
http://slamxhype.com/5-minutes-with/5-mins-with-matthew-chevallard/
Matthew Chevallard is the creative force behind luxury footwear brand Del Toro. The brand has been known in the marketplace as a high tier quality company with model offerings such as slippers, boat shoes, espadrilles, wingtips and more. With recently coming off a collaboration with Street Etiquette, Chevallard and the brand provide some insight of what’s to come for later this year in our latest “5 Mins With” feature.
SLAMXHYPE / Name? Matthew Chevallard / Matthew Chevallard. Owner/CEO/Creative Director of Del Toro Shoes.
SLAMXHYPE / Location? MC / Miami, Florida
SLAMXHYPE / What’s behind the name Del Toro? MC / It represents myself and where I come from and what the brand stands for. Del Toro means a fan of Torino Calcio which is the soccer team my father and I have cheered for ever since I was a child. It represents my hometown of Torino and our heritage as a brand, Made in Italy yet infused with American Prep and Sneakerhead culture.
SLAMXHYPE / You were pretty young when you started the company. What was your overall vision and what problems have you run into during the journey to now? MC / I founded it with two friends but took it over three years ago from them and changed the vision significantly. Our original business model was bespoke velvet slippers and it has evolved enormously ever since. To think we had one style shoe and color to start and now close to 50 different products of shoes and belts is still shocking to me but shows where and how we are evolving. My vision now is developing Del Toro as a full fledged luxury lifestyle brand.
SLAMXHYPE / What’s been one of the most defining moments since the brand’s inception? MC / Just all the overall positive momentum we are riding on now. It is such a great feeling to always have meetings that result in positive things and move us in the right direction. It especially feels good considering the amount of doors that would slam in my face before and the ridiculing I faced when people dubbed my shoe as a Hugh Hefner want-to-be shoe with zero place in the marketplace. But really seeing the brand in public and just hearing people recognize the brand is unbelievably rewarding.
SLAMXHYPE / What are you influenced by? MC / I am influenced by my upbringing and what I have experienced in life in being born and growing up in Italy, living in Palm Beach, going to boarding school outside of Boston and Princeton and going to college in Athens, Georgia and Miami, Florida. I characterize my influence as striving to be unique, yet classic and timeless at the same time. All art forms are inspiring but above all else individuality is a driving force. SLAMXHYPE / Talk about some of the silhouettes available. MC / In striving to become a lifestyle brand I want to offer every imaginable scenario of footwear for the modern, stylish gentleman and woman. That ranges from our velvet slipper to our driving shoe to our espadrille to our sneakers and wingtips. It’s casual wear made with thorough attention to detail and high craftsmanship all the while maintaining it as accessible.
SLAMXHYPE / Take us through the custom process and how are you able to keep the custom process so affordable? MC / Our bespoke program allows individuals to realize their style to the furthest way possible. The Prince Albert Slipper silhouette is an amazing shoe that functions as a canvas for anybody to express themselves through an extensive color palette or there family crest and or there favorite motif or monogram. Our whole intent is to keep Bespoke hand made in Italy shoes and offer them to the people. We always intend to offer this as a value add to our current offerings but definitely prefer for people to order our current collections since patience is key, shoe making is an art and a lot of people do not appreciate it enough.
SLAMXHYPE / What’s next for the Del Toro brand in 2012? MC / Adding more and more silhouettes and products to our stable to allow people to live the Del Toro lifestyle head to toe. Growing our women’s offerings and releasing our children collection too. Also allowing people to feel and see the products in real life is a strong objective so increasing our distribution in a variety selective fashion.
SLAMXHYPE / Last words? MC / Viva Del Toro, the sole suppliers.
Saks Fifth Avenue POV
Back in 2005 Matthew Chevallard took on the challenge of getting velvet slippers custom made with his school’s crest for graduation. The not-so-simple task turned into a booming footwear business. The name Del Toro, which means of the bull, comes from the mascot of the local soccer team in Torino, Italy where Matthew was born. The collection is mélange of Matthew’s Italian upbringing, his Palm Beach prep school days, and his love for New York style. Not wanting to skimp on quality, the Miami based company makes all of their shoes by hand on the Adriatic Coast of Italy. As creative director Matthew has grown the brand from the original embroidered velvet slippers to a range that includes everything from linen to leather lace-up espadrilles. Our favorite is the cotton Classic Camo Slipper in olive/black with black grosgrain trim, leather sole, stacked wooden heel, and the signature red stripe up the back. This style is exclusive to Saks.com and will be coming to the New York and Beverly Hills stores in the fall.

City Slippers
Formal slippers were once the domain of dandy men hosting black-tie events in their own homes. Now that these shoes have officially hit the streets, though, you’ll want to avoid velvet, crests, and anything else that’s meant to be worn with a tuxedo. Instead: Unexpected prints (like this optic camouflage) and canvas texture will make them feel appropriately casual. On weekends, wear them with nearly anything — except socks.
